Disability - Secret Diary of a Cool Girl

Camera

-          The camera tilted down to his level, it is a movement as though we are following the female actors view as she opens the door. This represents that he is not of the same level of ability as the other two actors. Separating the actors as they cannot relate of a physical level.

-          When the dad is filmed in his van the camera stays in a straight on shot in the same position, although the shots change quickly as he cannot keep himself distracted from what may or may not be happening to his son. By doing so it acts as a metaphor portraying how his mind is all over the place and to show how uncomfortable he feels about the situation.

-          When the girl and male actors start to become intimate. The camera tracks the movement of the two in a slow motion. This makes the scene appear more intimate and important to the disabled boy. It allows the audience to slowly take in everything that is happening just like the young boy is doing in the scene.  

Mise en Scene

-          The lighting in the clip is bright, meaning every part of the shot be seen on camera and in person. This subverts the usual fear to have your body on show, especially due to his disability. Showing this is something that he has wanted for a leg time so wants to visualise everything mentally as physically he is unable to.

-          She is wearing makeup, giving the impression that she has made an effort for the occasion. This may be due to it being her job to deliver a good service or because she personally wants to impress.  

-          The young boy and his dad are wearing similar tops, showing that they have the same interests and get along well. This could be because of his disability giving him an inability to make friends, therefore leaving his dad and PA’s as his only company.

-          The main bulk of the shots are set in a fashionable modern apartment. This makes the exchange seem more grown up and official, as if it is a normal interaction for the disabled young boy.

 Sound

-          Right at the beginning of the clip the sound of heels tapping along the floor is heard. This has clearly been added into the scene as the connotations to hookers and making a girl look sexier. Meaning we already unknowingly have the stereotype of what the girl in the clip is like without even introducing her.

-          The breathing of the actors has also been heightened. It makes their sighs an awkward silence more noticeable and it also makes the uncomfortableness of the characters more obvious to the audience.

-          “have you two talked about what blade can do…” is a quote used in the clip and again it highlights that the young boy is disabled and cannot have an ordinary life without help being arranged for him to do so.

-          The diegetic lock of the door sound represents how at that point it was the last chance he had to back out. Yet he decided to stay, expressing that this theoretically was him standing on his own for once and finally doing something on his own.

Editing

-          The transitions within the clip are quick, cutting peoples conversations short. By doing so it means the get to the point, as they are trying to avoid the anxious conversations about what is going to happen beforehand.

-          The screen time is another important factor when discussing disability representation. The boy is the one with the most screen time as he has the story(background) that the audience want to know about. His struggles are hard and to be able to understand how he is feeling we feel the need to know what he has been through, as though we have a chance to help him and other disabled people feel welcome into our society.

-          The pace in the sexual scenes are slow, making the scene more intimate and have more of a meaning as it is a big mile stone for the boy to overcome.

Evaluate the role of digital technology in the production, marketing and consumption of products?

Throughout the year’s technology convergence has always been taking place. This entails that’s as technology changes, different technological systems sometimes evolve towards performing similar tasks. This happens in production, marketing, exhibition and distribution in many ways. Throughout my research, I took an interest in The Amazing Spiderman 2 produced by Marvel Entertainment and Sony pictures and released by Columbia Pictures. Throughout the production of the film they had a budget of $200,000,000 which included paying the cast, the filming of the scenes and the marketing and distribution involved. Within the marketing, they used synergy and decided to produce a TV advert with Evian (the water drinks company), editing in a baby dancing Spiderman. It aired and drew attention to the new film available in cinemas. It also has produced a game which allows you to travel round you virtually free reign to web-sling your way through New York, picking out objectives on your trusty new smartphone Satnav. There are optional distractions to the main action, including picking up collectable items and taking photographs, but your main concern remains saving the city from genetic freaks and Oscorp's ham-fisted attempts to contain them. Again, adding to the spread of the films target audience.

There are three types of production; pre-production, production and post-production. Pre-production being before shooting begins, it included the story boards being made, set construction, location scouting and the finances of the product. Production is the next step, when things are being filmed, past this point financially the directors and producers cannot back out of the film. Then finally comes post-production, which is where the editing of the footage and adding in of the non-diegetic and diegetic sounds comes in and are enhanced. There are many new technologies included in these areas including drones, 3D printing and CGI. CGI is also known as computer generated imagery and during the production of The Amazing Spiderman 2, twenty layers of lightning CGI effects were applied to depict Electro. Jamie Foxx was photographed as Electro by KNB EFX team and the skin colours used to show the moods of the character. For the ‘pre-production’ of the film, the studios hired James Vanderbilt to write the screenplay and a selection of writers including Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci rewrote it to make sure the final screen play was the best that is could be.   The ‘production’ part of The Amazing Spiderman 2 took place during February through to June 2013, in New York city.

Distribution is a key factor when creating a film. This entails the way a film is shared out among a group or spread over an area. It is very important that the distribution of a film is done properly as it is what makes people want to go and see a film, the correct advertisement is what gives people interest in the product you are trying to sell. The process of distribution are as followed: a studio or interested investor decides to purchase the rights to the film, they then receive the licensing agreement which gives them access to produce the trailers websites and a free preview of the film. For instance, pirates of the Caribbean gave a preview of the trailer at the super bowl, which had millions of viewers publicising the film. For the smaller companies with a smaller distribution budget, there lots of below the line ways of marketing which can become very useful, including on social media and through interviews.  In the Amazing Spiderman 2, it was distributed by Sony. On the 17^th of July, they released a clip from the film with the first footage of Jamie Foxx as Electro to encourage viewers at the San Diego comic-Con international. This was cleverly throughout as comic-con is a large event where a majority of the target audience would be attending therefore make the audience excited about the film’s release.

Exhibition is the selling of the film on to cinemas either independent or mainstream. Types of exhibition depend on the type of audience the film is wishing to achieve. For example, YouTube is viewed by a wide audience although vimeo is more specified. Imax 3D, and the software’s used in Disney’s brave are both sound systems used to enhance the way a film is exhibited, to increase the audience satisfaction. The 3D and 4D resources are useful for the distributors and producers as it means their film cannot be pirated. The Exchange is how the audience views the film; Netflix, DVD, Blu-ray, sky movies, streaming, cinemas. Some of these sources can be pirated like streaming for instance on sites like putlocker. Many of these are usually shut down as piracy is illegal although technology has become so advanced that it is occurring more and more.

All in all the role of digital technology has played a large role within the film industry by expanding the way the films are marketed and also to do with the way films are produced. The industry has come a long way from black and white films to HD screening with 4D effects. Although the negative side to this is that some of the effects in films are too unrealistic and ruin the whole message that some of the films are trying to bring across. This can then take the purpose out of producing a film. However, I feel that the development and need for technology is positive as it means within the film industry it will always be able to stay one step ahead. For example, in Back to the Future thought up the idea of hover boards in 1989 and in 2015 we had Segway’s in every shop.

Dr Martin - Regionalism

The camera shots of this clip vary to make sure that every shot allows you to see the feelings and emotions of the characters. The wide shot, when the two plumbers and Dr Martin are discussing the problems with his tap, the doctor is leaning against the table and is still towering over the two other men. This could indicate that due to him being from London he has a better background and education therefore theoretically is of a higher class than the two uneducated plumbers from port Wynn. By the producer doing so he is segregating the men by using stereotypes to portray the region they are from. Giving the audience the impression that all county men are stupid and simple, and that hardworking men from the city are pompous and arrogant. Throughout the clip the scenes are all portraying ‘real life’ events, which is when the camera shots are at the level of the character that is speaking, giving more of a realistic feel to the show. For example, when the tap is exploding and the women walking in complaining about her working conditions. The camera is at a lower level when he is yelling at the girl and the two plumbers and when she starts to talk the shot changes to a higher shot of her face and shoulders. By doing so the audience is able to follow the emotions of each of the characters as it shows how all of them are feeling as the camera is constantly following their level of thought. There is also a full body shot included in the clip where the director uses tracking to capture the doctor walking into the police station. In this scene he is angry and we can tell this by the tense way that he carries himself as he expeditiously walks into the front yard of the building. This is a good technique used by the director as body language is key when figuring out how a person is feeling, as the full body tracking shot is used the audience has a clear indication to the stressed manor that the doctor appears to be in.

The clip is trying to portray reality; hence the pace of the clip is the same throughout. However, when the doctor is angrily walking into the police station the camera tracks him and consequently makes the pace of the clip increase. A fast pace has connotations to mean an intense scene is about to occur making the audience pay more attention as they want to know what may possibly happen. The producer has done this to create various differences between the fast pace Londoners and the slow peaceful life of Port Wynn. In TV it can become very boring if the past of the show is the same throughout, therefore changing the pace can keep the audience’s attention and increase the comparison between the two regions. The lighting also gives us indications about some of the nice places of the little village and the other parts which seem run down. In the surgery the previous doctor had not cared for hygiene and had let it become an unkempt mess. This is shown by the lighting being dark and dreary, giving the audience the idea that it is dirty and old fashioned. This is also increased by the fact that the outside scenes that are shot are so bring and colourful and appear to make Port Wynn a happy place to live.

First impressions and stereotypes are a big importance when trying to portray a character in a show. The clothing is a big clue towards how the producers want to bring across their characters. The younger girls of the village are the only ones dressed in girly pink colours and wearing makeup. This is the typical stereotype for teenage girls, young, experimental and dressed to impress. The older on of the plumbers was struggling to use nouns in his sentence, hinting that he hasn’t cared much for his education. Conforming to the normal county lifestyle of following your family trade, which is what his son has also done as they are not working together. We pity this man as it is obvious he is not living up to his potential, making the audience feel sorry for Dr martin as he is now living in the town in which people have low aspirations. The clip also includes a woman with dreadlocks, this is a metaphorical juxtaposition as in secluded sea side towns they don’t usually have the hippies with outrageous styles, especially working in the doctor’s surgery. This makes the town appear even more out there and as if it is a strange place to live. Making the people that live there more interesting and make the audience what to know more.

 “Down here we just go with the flow” is a quote said my a resided of the small village, it emphasises the idea that living in a place as such means you have not cares in the world. The producer wanted to make sure people saw the village as a different world, as if unconnected from civilisation. Thus, increasing the divide between the doctor and other people in the community due to their different background and lifestyles. They have also added Foley of the dog crying when he is left at the police station. Dogs cry when they are sad or in need of something/someone, the clear noise of the dog crying shows he has a connection to Dr Martin, in which the doctor hasn’t had with anyone else in the village. The producer could have added emphasis on this as in undermines the intelligence of him as the only person he is able to have a relationship with is a stray dog in the village. Also, the tone and urgency of people’s voices becomes heightened when dealing with the broken tap. The diegetic sound of the water spraying has been increased to make it sound as though a bigger problem that it is. The high tones, loud shouting and piercing water sounds all add up to make the scene appear dramatic and add stress to the doctor’s hectic day. All in all, the main parts of sound used are all to increase comparisons and intensity of the situations throughout the clip.
