Disability - Secret Diary of a Cool Girl

Camera
-          The camera tilted down to his level, it is a movement as though we are following the female actors view as she opens the door. This represents that he is not of the same level of ability as the other two actors. Separating the actors as they cannot relate of a physical level.

-          When the dad is filmed in his van the camera stays in a straight on shot in the same position, although the shots change quickly as he cannot keep himself distracted from what may or may not be happening to his son. By doing so it acts as a metaphor portraying how his mind is all over the place and to show how uncomfortable he feels about the situation.

-          When the girl and male actors start to become intimate. The camera tracks the movement of the two in a slow motion. This makes the scene appear more intimate and important to the disabled boy. It allows the audience to slowly take in everything that is happening just like the young boy is doing in the scene.

Mise en Scene
-          The lighting in the clip is bright, meaning every part of the shot be seen on camera and in person. This subverts the usual fear to have your body on show, especially due to his disability. Showing this is something that he has wanted for a leg time so wants to visualise everything mentally as physically he is unable to.

-          She is wearing makeup, giving the impression that she has made an effort for the occasion. This may be due to it being her job to deliver a good service or because she personally wants to impress.

-          The young boy and his dad are wearing similar tops, showing that they have the same interests and get along well. This could be because of his disability giving him an inability to make friends, therefore leaving his dad and PA’s as his only company.

-          The main bulk of the shots are set in a fashionable modern apartment. This makes the exchange seem more grown up and official, as if it is a normal interaction for the disabled young boy.

 Sound
-          Right at the beginning of the clip the sound of heels tapping along the floor is heard. This has clearly been added into the scene as the connotations to hookers and making a girl look sexier. Meaning we already unknowingly have the stereotype of what the girl in the clip is like without even introducing her.

-          The breathing of the actors has also been heightened. It makes their sighs an awkward silence more noticeable and it also makes the uncomfortableness of the characters more obvious to the audience.

-          “have you two talked about what blade can do…” is a quote used in the clip and again it highlights that the young boy is disabled and cannot have an ordinary life without help being arranged for him to do so.

-          The diegetic lock of the door sound represents how at that point it was the last chance he had to back out. Yet he decided to stay, expressing that this theoretically was him standing on his own for once and finally doing something on his own.

Editing
-          The transitions within the clip are quick, cutting peoples conversations short. By doing so it means the get to the point, as they are trying to avoid the anxious conversations about what is going to happen beforehand.

-          The screen time is another important factor when discussing disability representation. The boy is the one with the most screen time as he has the story(background) that the audience want to know about. His struggles are hard and to be able to understand how he is feeling we feel the need to know what he has been through, as though we have a chance to help him and other disabled people feel welcome into our society.

-          The pace in the sexual scenes are slow, making the scene more intimate and have more of a meaning as it is a big mile stone for the boy to overcome.

Evaluate the role of digital technology in the production, marketing and consumption of products?

Throughout the year’s technology convergence has always been taking place. This entails that’s as technology changes, different technological systems sometimes evolve towards performing similar tasks. This happens in production, marketing, exhibition and distribution in many ways. Throughout my research, I took an interest in The Amazing Spiderman 2 produced by Marvel Entertainment and Sony pictures and released by Columbia Pictures. Throughout the production of the film they had a budget of $200,000,000 which included paying the cast, the filming of the scenes and the marketing and distribution involved. Within the marketing, they used synergy and decided to produce a TV advert with Evian (the water drinks company), editing in a baby dancing Spiderman. It aired and drew attention to the new film available in cinemas. It also has produced a game which allows you to travel round you virtually free reign to web-sling your way through New York, picking out objectives on your trusty new smartphone Satnav. There are optional distractions to the main action, including picking up collectable items and taking photographs, but your main concern remains saving the city from genetic freaks and Oscorp's ham-fisted attempts to contain them. Again, adding to the spread of the films target audience.
There are three types of production; pre-production, production and post-production. Pre-production being before shooting begins, it included the story boards being made, set construction, location scouting and the finances of the product. Production is the next step, when things are being filmed, past this point financially the directors and producers cannot back out of the film. Then finally comes post-production, which is where the editing of the footage and adding in of the non-diegetic and diegetic sounds comes in and are enhanced. There are many new technologies included in these areas including drones, 3D printing and CGI. CGI is also known as computer generated imagery and during the production of The Amazing Spiderman 2, twenty layers of lightning CGI effects were applied to depict Electro. Jamie Foxx was photographed as Electro by KNB EFX team and the skin colours used to show the moods of the character. For the ‘pre-production’ of the film, the studios hired James Vanderbilt to write the screenplay and a selection of writers including Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci rewrote it to make sure the final screen play was the best that is could be.   The ‘production’ part of The Amazing Spiderman 2 took place during February through to June 2013, in New York city.
Distribution is a key factor when creating a film. This entails the way a film is shared out among a group or spread over an area. It is very important that the distribution of a film is done properly as it is what makes people want to go and see a film, the correct advertisement is what gives people interest in the product you are trying to sell. The process of distribution are as followed: a studio or interested investor decides to purchase the rights to the film, they then receive the licensing agreement which gives them access to produce the trailers websites and a free preview of the film. For instance, pirates of the Caribbean gave a preview of the trailer at the super bowl, which had millions of viewers publicising the film. For the smaller companies with a smaller distribution budget, there lots of below the line ways of marketing which can become very useful, including on social media and through interviews.  In the Amazing Spiderman 2, it was distributed by Sony. On the 17th of July, they released a clip from the film with the first footage of Jamie Foxx as Electro to encourage viewers at the San Diego comic-Con international. This was cleverly throughout as comic-con is a large event where a majority of the target audience would be attending therefore make the audience excited about the film’s release.
Exhibition is the selling of the film on to cinemas either independent or mainstream. Types of exhibition depend on the type of audience the film is wishing to achieve. For example, YouTube is viewed by a wide audience although vimeo is more specified. Imax 3D, and the software’s used in Disney’s brave are both sound systems used to enhance the way a film is exhibited, to increase the audience satisfaction. The 3D and 4D resources are useful for the distributors and producers as it means their film cannot be pirated. The Exchange is how the audience views the film; Netflix, DVD, Blu-ray, sky movies, streaming, cinemas. Some of these sources can be pirated like streaming for instance on sites like putlocker. Many of these are usually shut down as piracy is illegal although technology has become so advanced that it is occurring more and more.
All in all the role of digital technology has played a large role within the film industry by expanding the way the films are marketed and also to do with the way films are produced. The industry has come a long way from black and white films to HD screening with 4D effects. Although the negative side to this is that some of the effects in films are too unrealistic and ruin the whole message that some of the films are trying to bring across. This can then take the purpose out of producing a film. However, I feel that the development and need for technology is positive as it means within the film industry it will always be able to stay one step ahead. For example, in Back to the Future thought up the idea of hover boards in 1989 and in 2015 we had Segway’s in every shop.

Task 9 - Film Industry Terminology

These are the key terms that need to be known for the Film Industry part of our course...

Task 8 - Technology within the Film Industry

For this task I produced my own mind map, including technology that is used in the production, exhibition exchange and distribution processes of the film industry. This is what my research concluded...

As a class we came together and produced a larger mind map with all of the information the class had gathered, producing and excellent revision resource...

Dr Martin - Regionalism

The camera shots of this clip vary to make sure that every shot allows you to see the feelings and emotions of the characters. The wide shot, when the two plumbers and Dr Martin are discussing the problems with his tap, the doctor is leaning against the table and is still towering over the two other men. This could indicate that due to him being from London he has a better background and education therefore theoretically is of a higher class than the two uneducated plumbers from port Wynn. By the producer doing so he is segregating the men by using stereotypes to portray the region they are from. Giving the audience the impression that all county men are stupid and simple, and that hardworking men from the city are pompous and arrogant. Throughout the clip the scenes are all portraying ‘real life’ events, which is when the camera shots are at the level of the character that is speaking, giving more of a realistic feel to the show. For example, when the tap is exploding and the women walking in complaining about her working conditions. The camera is at a lower level when he is yelling at the girl and the two plumbers and when she starts to talk the shot changes to a higher shot of her face and shoulders. By doing so the audience is able to follow the emotions of each of the characters as it shows how all of them are feeling as the camera is constantly following their level of thought. There is also a full body shot included in the clip where the director uses tracking to capture the doctor walking into the police station. In this scene he is angry and we can tell this by the tense way that he carries himself as he expeditiously walks into the front yard of the building. This is a good technique used by the director as body language is key when figuring out how a person is feeling, as the full body tracking shot is used the audience has a clear indication to the stressed manor that the doctor appears to be in.

The clip is trying to portray reality; hence the pace of the clip is the same throughout. However, when the doctor is angrily walking into the police station the camera tracks him and consequently makes the pace of the clip increase. A fast pace has connotations to mean an intense scene is about to occur making the audience pay more attention as they want to know what may possibly happen. The producer has done this to create various differences between the fast pace Londoners and the slow peaceful life of Port Wynn. In TV it can become very boring if the past of the show is the same throughout, therefore changing the pace can keep the audience’s attention and increase the comparison between the two regions. The lighting also gives us indications about some of the nice places of the little village and the other parts which seem run down. In the surgery the previous doctor had not cared for hygiene and had let it become an unkempt mess. This is shown by the lighting being dark and dreary, giving the audience the idea that it is dirty and old fashioned. This is also increased by the fact that the outside scenes that are shot are so bring and colourful and appear to make Port Wynn a happy place to live.

First impressions and stereotypes are a big importance when trying to portray a character in a show. The clothing is a big clue towards how the producers want to bring across their characters. The younger girls of the village are the only ones dressed in girly pink colours and wearing makeup. This is the typical stereotype for teenage girls, young, experimental and dressed to impress. The older on of the plumbers was struggling to use nouns in his sentence, hinting that he hasn’t cared much for his education. Conforming to the normal county lifestyle of following your family trade, which is what his son has also done as they are not working together. We pity this man as it is obvious he is not living up to his potential, making the audience feel sorry for Dr martin as he is now living in the town in which people have low aspirations. The clip also includes a woman with dreadlocks, this is a metaphorical juxtaposition as in secluded sea side towns they don’t usually have the hippies with outrageous styles, especially working in the doctor’s surgery. This makes the town appear even more out there and as if it is a strange place to live. Making the people that live there more interesting and make the audience what to know more.

“Down here we just go with the flow” is a quote said my a resided of the small village, it emphasises the idea that living in a place as such means you have not cares in the world. The producer wanted to make sure people saw the village as a different world, as if unconnected from civilisation. Thus, increasing the divide between the doctor and other people in the community due to their different background and lifestyles. They have also added Foley of the dog crying when he is left at the police station. Dogs cry when they are sad or in need of something/someone, the clear noise of the dog crying shows he has a connection to Dr Martin, in which the doctor hasn’t had with anyone else in the village. The producer could have added emphasis on this as in undermines the intelligence of him as the only person he is able to have a relationship with is a stray dog in the village. Also, the tone and urgency of people’s voices becomes heightened when dealing with the broken tap. The diegetic sound of the water spraying has been increased to make it sound as though a bigger problem that it is. The high tones, loud shouting and piercing water sounds all add up to make the scene appear dramatic and add stress to the doctor’s hectic day. All in all, the main parts of sound used are all to increase comparisons and intensity of the situations throughout the clip.

Task 7 - Audience Cinema Going Habbits

From research of surveys and other recourses it is clear to see that during WW2 and for a short while after, was when going to the cinema was most popular with an all time high of 1,635.0 million in admission fees during 1946. At these times going to the cinema was known as 'going to the pictures'. Going to the pictures was extremely popular as there wasn't anything similar at home due to ordinary families not yet having televisions. Even in the late 1950s as televisions trickled into homes, the screens were tiny and the choice were small. Going to the pictures was an outing for young and old alike. Which made the cinema a fun fulfilled experience for all of the family, thus it became very popular. Most towns and large villages had their own cinema.

  • Recently the UK box office receipts have being rising. In 2015 they came to £1.236 million, up 17% from 2014. although the box office share of independent films was 10.5%, down 16% from 2014.

Representation of Torchwood: Notes

Mise en Scene:
- All of the characters are dressed formally, plus one of the main characters is homosexual and also part of the royal navy, which wouldn't be accepted during that time era.
- The way the lighting turns into a bright white light at the end of the clip acts as a metaphor. The way it acts like the bright light people experience before going to heaven, the ending of there life, in this clip representing the ending of their love. It being over forever...
- The crisp facial expressions show the feeling of freedom when they're with each other.
- The setting is formal and almost inappropriate for anyone to show affection towards each other let alone a gay couple, adding to the show factor of a homosexual couple.
- The bright machinery used at the start of the clip gives the impression that it doesn't correspond to the time era. Also giving the impression that the genre of the clip is sci-fi.

Independant Film Research

For this task we had to research an independent film and find out key points and information about it. The film I chose was The Selfish Giant and here are my findings...

Merlin, Representation of Class and Social Status - Notes

- The camera moves with the characters, showing even though he is middle class he is important in society and the story line of the programe
- As the lady's reflection is shown in the mirror, they have used special effects to depict her as an elderly witch like women, suggesting a hidden story within the clip.
- When the fighting scene occurs the pace increases, creating a higher intensity, as both of the characters increase in pace it shows they are both of an equal authority at this point
- Inside of the clean castle the lighting is bright and pure, as apposed to the dark damp lighting of the streets outside. This shows that the people living inside of the castle are of higher worth and can afford to live in such a luxurious place. Increasing the divide between rich and poor rather than improving the well fair of everyone in their society.
- Merlin's ability to move the objects shows he isn't a normal civilian, he has power over everyone else with the use of magic. This is portrayed when special effects are used to change his eye colour and move the box in that was of the lord.

Coming Down The Mountain - Disability Essay Answer

The first shot shown in the clip was a bird’s eye view, looking over the two boys in their bedroom. Its shows the structure of the room and how the two boys have split personalities. One neat and structures and the other a jumble of toys and as if a rainbow has exploded, filling his half of the room with colour. This scene then leads on to a 180® tracking shot of the boy sitting on his bed. The movement is used to show the movement of his brain. The shot moves across his face representing his thought process of moving from point to point, and how he is questioning why he has these dark daydreams. The camera then moves to the young disabled boy and zooms in on his face. He is sleeping peacefully and this illustrates his purity and how innocent his intentions are, yet his brother still sees him as a burden. Later on in the clip the angles of the camera change from being on the same level for both of the boys to low shot angles as he’s about to leave him. This gives the impression that he is immature and untrustworthy, belittling him because of his disability. This is again shown when he is on the bus home as the change in usual journeys home has stressed him out and the close up shot used shows how much he is struggling and scared about what has and could possibly happen.
Throughout he clip the lighting is of a dull colour which gives the impression that the eldest boy is sad and not happy with his life. Which is also reflected in the half and half design of the bedroom. The disabled boy’s side is very bright and colourful which shows that he is happy and content with his life where as his brothers side is quite dull and dark which shows he is not happy because he has to look after his brother all the time. Stereotypes are used a lot in the clip as the older boy portrays the usual teenager traits of being unreliable- leaving the boy and potentially putting his life in danger whilst he goes off with his friends. The toys are another key point that demonstrate his child like mind, adding in another stereotype for disabled children. At the bus stop he is playing with his slinky toy and his brother is standing waiting. A child’s mind would not be able to hold concentration and would be easily distracted which is the same as the disabled boy in the scene. You can tell by the clothed that the disabled boy is wearing that he doesn’t care about the way people perceive him: baggy trousers and oversized tops. In conjunction with this, he is oblivious to the confused and sorry expressions on people’s faces when they look at him, as if simply because of his disability he isn’t entitled to the good things in life.
The two brothers are the ones given the most screen time, as they are the ones who are portraying the narrative of the clip. Although, as the clip follows the elder boys point of view he has the majority of the screen time between the two as it gives us an insight into his lifestyle and opinions. communication is a big thing that the down syndrome boy struggles with, he doesn't know how to portray his feelings or emphasis with people. in the clip this is shown by him not getting a say n what happens, he is looked after and cared for 24/7. the fade from one shot to the other, is smooth and flows, showing how the day gradually goes on. The more able character is very opinionated and doesn't need attention and caring like the other character. But he also plays on the fact that he gets no attention from his parents and blames his brother for this as he is jealous. inferring his little brother has ruined what would be a perfect life...
At the end of the clip, the music used was sad and of a disheartened tune. This is done to reflect the emotions of the boy on the bus who has been abandoned by his elder brother. Isolation and the feeling of disownment. The diegetic dialogue between the parents and the boy with down syndrome is very sympathetic, they treat him like a young child. In the kitchen the mum says "don't be so selfish" to the older brother. This infers to the audience that the boy with the disability is treated with more care than his older brother, making the elder boy not feel good enough for his family's appreciation. Furthermore, the producer uses voiceovers of the older brother who tells a story of what it is like to have a disabled brother, giving his opinion and point of view. At times the brother's tone of voice is angry and annoyed. This implies how it is frustrating for him and restricts his freedom to do things he wants to do. Adding to the hardship of having the responsibility to care for his brother. Disability is negatively depicted in the opening scene, when the brother says I want to "kill my brother" there is parallel music being played. The music is intense and portrays the anger in his feelings. This represents the contrast in emotions because the disabled brother is peaceful and does not realise how frustrated his brother is because he does not have the mental capacity to do so, is intentions are pure.

Coming Down The Mountain - Disability Notes

Camera
- birds eye view, first shot, to show the rooms structure and their split personalities
- low angles shot when he's about to leave him, to show he's more immature and unworthy
- 180 pan, a tracking shot, the second shot of him on his bed, shows his brain thinking and moving from point to point
- zoom on the boy in bed, to show his purity and how innocent his intentions are
- close up on the bus, changes stress him out and the close shot shows how stressed he is and how he is struggling with the journey home.

Mise en Scene
- dull lighting, shows sad life not happy.
-teenagers, not reliable leaves the boy on his own and potentially puts him in danger and goes off with his friend to a party.
-no makeup represents innocence.
- half and half sides of the bedroom, disabled boys side is very bright and colourful which shows that he is happy and content with his life where as his brothers side is quite dull and dark which shows he is not happy because he has t look after his brother all the time.
- at the bus stop the disabled boy is playing with his slinky toy which shows he has a child's mind we know this because his brother who isn't disabled is not playing with any toys.
-facial expressions- people looking at the disabled boy funny.
- disabled boy isn't really too bothered about what he is wearing.

Editing
- There are the two main characters who get the most screen time because its about their lives.
- The more able boy has the most screen time to show his point of view.
- The disabled boy doesn't get to show how he sees things. Typically he doesn't get a say in what happens.
- Fade from one shot to the other, it is smooth and flows. Shows how the day gradually goes on.
- The more able character is very opinionated and doesn't need attention and caring like the other character.

Sound
-In the kitchen scene the disabled boy doesn't think before he speaks. He says 'I need a poo'. this tells us that he is vulnerable an hasn't matured as a teenager.
- Also in the kitchen scene their parents talk calmly and soft towards the boy with down syndrome. --- Whereas their parents talk harshly and snap at the other brother. This shows how disabled and abled people are treated differently.
- The voiceover and the music are contrapuntal. The dialogue in the voiceover explains how
annoyed the able body boy is with his disabled brother but the music is calm and soft.
- During the conversations in the kitchen the abled boy talks a lot more than the disabled boy this tells us that in the real world disabled people don't really have a say in what goes on in society.
- The diegetic sound of the cutlery clanging against each other and the chairs scraping along the floor brings us back to the reality of them being a normal family.

Waterloo Road Analysis

Today we looked as a clip of waterloo road with the focus being representation of age. Here are the notes that I wrote up...

Camera :
  • Conversations with the students and the teachers, the camera looks down upon the students and looks up at the teachers. Making the teacher seem as though they have a higher authority over the younger characters. For instance the first scenes when the students have been mischievous and are being told off by the teacher.
  • there's lots of still shots recording conversations. Then the camera moves with the actor when they walk away from he scene.
  • when the girl is arguing with the boy about a family scenario it is shot through a door. this shows that they're on their own and doing something that shouldn't be happening i.e. bullying
Mise en Scene:
  • Their uniforms are scruffy and not worn correctly, yet the adults have made an effort into what they look like
  • Set in a school, clearly an average comprehensive school, middle aged adults and troubled kids attend
  • Everyone cares about what they look like and what other people think of them e.g. the girl caring about the way people now perceive her family and the teacher trying on new clothes to impress the other teacher. Displaying that people don't grow out of wanting other peoples approval to increase their self worth.
  • The children feel like fighting is the answer to solve everything. society hasn't brought them up well.
  • The boys broke the camera, an adult would have taken more care
Sound:
  • They use slang words as if they are a part of their vocabulary. The teachers don't showing the different ways they were brought up.
  • The teachers talk down to the students with a sarcastic tone as if they know they are better than them.
  • A Foley effect is used to add emphasis to the little sounds like the foot steps in the corridor or the clicking of the teachers fingers. This makes every action of the characters more obvious and clear to the audience on how they behave in different ways.
  • More childish words are used by the students which shows the immaturity they have compared to the adults
  • As the girl is chasing the boy down the corridor a fast passed music comes on. representing the fast thoughts and adrenaline rush that is going through her head. Kids have a lot to handle too and she's expressing her struggle to cope through fighting.
Editing:
  • they cut the scenes with straight cuts as it makes the clip more realistic, considering it is representing a school.
  • the scenes are quick and change between different characters, due to there being so many kids in a school it shows how they all are noticed
  • screen time is another key point as all of the main characters all receive an equal amount of time on screen. Again this shows that they are all of equal importance in portraying a story in the show.                                                                                                                                         -  the teachers are also shown on their own controlling a large group of students representing the power they hold over them.

Top Films of 2016

  • Look up top grossing films of 2016 - Write down top five and their producers/exhibitors and when they came out

  • 1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
    14 December2016
    Lucasfilm production

    2. Finding Dory
    8 June 2016
Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures

    3. Captain America: Civil War
    29 April 2016
Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studio Motion Pictures.

    4. The Secret Life Of Pets
    8 July 2016
    Illumination Entertainment

    5. The Jungle Book
    15 April 2016
    Produced by Walt Disney Pictures

  • What are the big six film companies?
  • -Warner Bros. Pictures. Warner Bros. ...
    -20th Century Fox.
-Paramount Pictures. Paramount Pictures is the longest operating major studio in Hollywood. ...
    -Universal Pictures.
-Sony Pictures Entertainment (earlier known as Columbia-Tristar Pictures)
    -Walt Disney Studios

  • Think of the dates and school holidays, which films are on general release?
  •  General release is the act of making a film available to be shown in theatres. All of the top five films released where on general release. They are also released in school holidays this is because they will have more of a change of selling tickets, as more people have the time to view the films.

  • What genre of films are there? blockbuster, indie, foreign?
  • Comedy | Crime | Thriller | Mystery | Romance | History | Adventure | Biography | Drama | War | Sci-Fi | Music

  • How many are sequels?
  •  2 - Finding Dory and Rogue one: A star wars story

  • How many are blockbusters aimed at a younger audience?
  •  Three of these films are blockbusters for the younger audience. They have made it big due to their huge amount of advertising towards the young children.

  • How many were produced by the Big Six?
  •  One of the top five was produced by the big six; The jungle Book. although they were not produced they still had a connection to the big six, as some were distributed by them for instance, finding dory was released by Walt Disney and captain America: civil war was distributed by Walt Disney pictures.

  • What kinds of films seem to be missing?
  •  In this selection of films there are no independent films, this is because independent films are of a smaller budget therefore cannot compete with the masses of advertisement that the big six are able to afford. Plus there are no sad chick flics. this is down to the small target audience that they have compared to the action films that a wide variety of people want to watch.

  • How many of the film distributors seem to be producers as well?
  •  The distributers are also a part of the big six as it means more money can be put behind the film. The more money that goes into the film the more money that is expected to produce. No publicity is bad publicity.

  • Who do you think are the target audiences for these?
  • Due to them being block buster films, it means they have a wide target audience and make sure this shows in the way they advertise. By marketing with colours that suit both of the sexes and using appropriate language for the bffc rating.

    Sub-genres of TV Dramas

    Teen Drama
    - Gossip Girl
•The gossip girl characters are all of a higher class. This is obvious due to the areas that they live in, the fancy designer clothing that they wear and the huge penthouse apartments that they live in. part of the drama is about their thrilling love life and how they all find love. The region that the main characters come from is supposedly the ‘it place’ to live. Their connection to this place are a part of their identity and is what makes their lives so envious. As the characters ages are set as the same age as the target audience it makes the audience a part of the TV drama as they go through the same emotions and transitions. The gender of the cast plays a big part in the representation as they are both equally shown as powerful. For instance Blair Wooldorf and Chuck Bass compete for power and both achieve it. Showing how a women can do anything as well as a man.

    Period/Costume Drama
    - Downton Abbey
    • This TV drama is set between 1912 and 1925, portraying the upper classes way of life. During this era homosexuality would have been seen as a disgrace therefore all of the characters are seen as straight. Much like the modern show Gossip girl, where you come from plays a big part in your place in society. If you come from a regal family and have a large estate you will gain more respect within your society. The age varies with the characters as it is based around a family concept, therefore, has each generation. Women in those times had little rights and where thought of as bellow men and this is portrayed in the show.

    Police/Crime Drama
    - Newtricks
    • The characters in Newtricks are the working class, it follows their job and the way they go about policing. The main characters are three retired police officers and a women governor who keeps them all in check. This is a good representation of women in power as it shows how she has authority over the men even though she is outnumbered by them, they still have respect for her. Although it is not a disability Sandra (the governor) has a burn on her arm from a child hood injury. She openly has it on show in the episodes giving views with similar defects that they should have the confidence to not be a shamed of them. As mentioned before the main character are retired police officers, attracting the older audience as they can relate to the feeling of having to keep yourself busy after retirement.

    Medical/Hospital Drama
    - Holby City
    • As it is in a work environment such as a hospital there is always something happening. Not one day is the same and it makes it easy for the producers to hire and fire the cast. Due to this the variety a variety of classes are shown as there are working class, that work there, and the other patients that attend the hospital. At hospitals there are many different illnesses that they can encorperate into the story line. This means they can adapt disabilities and illnesses to gain a connection to the audience and the problems that they might be going through. Male doctors and female doctors, male nurses and female nurses are all shown to show versatility between the types of jobs everyone is now able to do.

What TV dramas do you watch?

Personally, I like all of the girly chick flicks like Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. This is because as I am of a similar age they have lives that I can relate to. Although the drama doesn't happen in my life, it makes it interesting to watch knowing that it happens in others.
